What Would Happen if You Lived on Raw Milk Alone?

Writer: Hilary ElmerHilary Elmer

Theoretically, milk has everything you need to survive.

So what would happen if you consumed nothing but raw milk?

Milk is a miracle. Drinking raw milk, to me, tastes like drinking life. My body craves it.

It's more than just food--although it's the BEST food. Raw milk contains every protein, every fat, every sugar, every mineral and vitamin that a young body needs to grow and thrive.

But it's more than that. Raw milk is full of antibodies to prevent sickness. It contains enzymes to aid digestion. Raw milk is home to a plethora of beneficial microbes like healthy yeasts and lactic bacteria.

So much food today has bad stuff in it--pesticides, stabilizers, dyes, artificial flavors, preservatives... It's a struggle to find food that is just good for you.

If you can find grass fed raw milk that was produced hygienically, there is nothing in there that is toxic. Only good.

Usually when we think of a "super food", it's some type of food that has abnormally high levels of a vital nutrient. Raw grass fed milk is sort of a super food, except that instead of having a disproportionately high amount of any one nutrient, it has a perfect balance of ALL vital nutrients. You get perfect nutrition in a glass of raw milk.

Substitute for Fasting?

I practice fasting and I encourage people to fast because it triggers your body to heal itself at a deep level. (Fasting is voluntarily abstaining from food for a certain amount of time.)

But what if you can't fast?

Or, what if you do fast, and you want to ensure that you really nourish yourself between fasts?

I hesitate to say "do a milk cleanse!" because I think "cleanses" are over rated and the word gets misused. But the concept of consuming only something that is easy to digest and assimilate, and does not leave you with toxins to eliminate, has a lot of merit, particularly for people trying to heal themselves naturally.

Can you go for an extended time consuming nothing but raw milk?

Yes! You can absolutely live on raw milk alone. For a day, a week, for years, even a life time.

There are documented cases of people doing just that in a book by Dr. Charles Sanford Porter in his book Milk Diet as a Remedy for Chronic Disease, which book and protocol will be the subject of next week's blog.

My Week on Nothing But Milk

I consumed nothing but raw milk for seven days in January 2025. Just for fun.

My experience with it was probably different than what someone else's would be. I am:

  • pretty healthy

  • already eat a clean, wholesome diet

  • am used to fasting where I consume only water for days at a time

I didn't have preconceived a goal for how much milk I would consume each day. I drank what I was hungry for, which turned out to be just under a gallon a day.

My family drinks kefir every day already, so a portion of that milk was fermented into kefir.

Not surprisingly, I had to pee a lot!

Because I stuck to my eating in a window rules, I did not have any milk before 9 a.m. or after 6 p.m. This left me thirsty outside of my eating (er, drinking milk) window, so I had some water during those times. I was not thirsty while drinking milk.

The one thing raw milk lacks is fiber. It was not a problem for me, but if someone was prone to hemerrhoids, it would be beneficial for them to eat an apple every couple of days to keep solids moving through smoothly.

So what is my take on living on raw milk?

It was definitely easier than fasting. If you want to give your body a chance to heal by consuming perfect, easy to digest nutrition, I recommend you try a milk diet.

Drinking milk will not put you in a fasting state, but it will give your body a break from working hard to digest food and get rid of toxins. Kind of like going to a spa for your cells.

If you are not disciplined about what you eat, you might find that it is hard to not eat solid food. Habit and emotional satisfaction are a big part of what drive people to eat. You would have to exercise self control in that regard.

For me, I was comparing my milk diet to a fast, and being allowed to drink lots of milk was so easy it seemed like cheating.

I will not stop fasting and replace it with milk diets. Fasting has benefits that cannot be achieved any other way. But fasting must be paired with excellent nutrition, and drinking lots of milk is a great way to accomplish that.

If you are trying to achieve better health, or if you feel like your diet is lacking, I believe that you would notice a large benefit from drinking only raw milk.

For Therapeutic Benefits

As mentioned above, next week's blog is going to focus on a protocol by a man who perfected using raw milk to heal people with chronic diseases of all kinds: Dr. Charles Sanford Porter and his book Milk Diet as a Remedy for Chronic Disease.

My husband followed this protocol for 4 weeks to heal his COPD.

It was much more strenuous than what I did. All that I did was replace my solid food with grass fed raw milk for a week. I lived my life as normal besides that. Dr. Porter makes you go to the extreme with exactly how much milk you drink, how much rest you get, and other details that maximize your body's ability to heal.

The reason his protocol is effective is because you drink SO much milk that your blood volume increases, and therefore the circulation and nutrients going to each cell increase. Because you are resting, your body has one thing and one thing only to do, and that is to repair itself.

It's healthy to live on raw milk, and you can really nourish yourself by doing so. If you are seeking to help yourself heal and want an alternative to fasting, you will find great benefit to living on raw milk for a time.

Depending on your goals, it may be worth the effort of following Dr. Porter's protocol. Watch for that blog next week.
